HOUSEHOLD BASICS
by : Vanessa Henderson
The hidden potential of household basics is really quite amazing.
Before you throw away the simple things in life, check out our quick fix options.
Tea Party
The fibres in a tea bag are strong enough to doctor a split or broken nail. Rip off a small piece of an unused tea bag. Put a drop of nail glue where nail needs fixing. Place the torn piece on the break, buff it smooth and finish with a coat of fresh polish. The tea bag fibres seep into the crack and if you reapply glue every time you remove the polish, the patch should last about six weeks.
Hold the Line
Visine Eye Drops doubles as an eyeliner sealer. Apply a few drops to a powder eye shadow, then pick up the dampened shadow with a fine eyeliner brush and stroke it next to upper lashes. The liner lasts for hours - a better result than you'd get with your favourite eye pencil.
De-puff eyes
An eye gel (stored in the fridge for mornings like this) reduces swelling and redness. Look for refreshing botanicals like cucumber and camomile.
A cold compress for five minutes will do wonders in the morning and an old favourite from the fridge is the trusty cucumber!
In The Lab
Retinols: If you're concerned with wrinkles and pigmentation spots, a face cream with retinol (a derivative of vitamin A) can help. U se it in place of your daytime SPF moisturiser after you wash your face.
Hair Colour Booster:
If your highlights turn dull, shampoo your hair once a week with Morning Fresh Dishwashing Liquid until your next colouring appointment. The soap is gentle yet does the trick to brighten highlights.
Hair ways
Johnson's Baby Lotion makes a great hairstyling lotion in a pinch. Depending on how long your hair is, rub a five cent piece amount in your hands and slick palms over just-washed, towel-dried hair.
You Glow Girl!
Celebrity make-up artists love Vaseline to moisturise lips and the under-eye area. It's also a great highlighter on cheekbones.
Feeling brave? This trusty product can even be applied on top of powder shadow to create a glossy finish.
Getting Lippy
A simple toothbrush is a super lip exfoliator. Apply some lip balm, let sit for about five minutes then brush lips with the toothbrush for no more than a minute.
No more chapping
Psssst . . . a vitamin E gel capsule is a great stand in for an effective lip-gloss - simply prick the capsule with a pin, squeeze the contents onto your fingertip and you’re good to go!
