I was excited to get into ‘Heartless’ simply because of its cover. A simple, light blue jacket wraps the small book and is printed with a black heart with a tiny girl inside. It’s a beautiful cover and I thought the book inside would be the same. Sadly, it was not.
‘Heartless’ is written from the perspective of the central character as she grows through different ages. Perhaps this is the reason I so disliked the first half of the book – the writing when from the view of a child and young adult is disturbingly slack and the character just seems to go through so many heartbreaking events that you begin to think Walton has gone too far.
As the character ages, we see the writing mature and the predictability of the story is exposed as all becomes okay by the end. With a bit of self-editing, Walton could have written a book that was more believable and thus, easier to relate to.
2.5/5
