Dad's Day

This year why not try something totally different for Dad? Annie Payne, Personal Historian from History from the Heart, suggests the following ideas to make your Father’s Day unforgettable:

Make a Milestone Memory Book for Dad

• Spend a few days casting your mind back to recall some of those wonderful memories you have of your Dad – teaching you to tie your shoelaces, running behind you when you learned to ride a two-wheeler bicycle, the time he set the fence on fire when cooking the BBQ, reading a scary bedtime story together…………

• Write the memories down and once you have a reasonable collection, sort out the favourites.

• Purchase a special notebook or journal and, on a new page for each memory, write down your memory of Dad.  Try to locate other memorabilia or photos to stick on the opposite page to illustrate the point.  If you are doing this with a child, ask them to draw a picture of Dad on each page or write a poem about him.

• Consider asking other family members to write their favourite memory about Dad in the book.

• On Father’s Day, give him your Milestone Memories book and watch his eyes light up!

Make a Treasure Chest for Dad

• Select and cover a suitable box and lid with paper and decorate it (shops have a selection of stick-on accessories).

• Gather up a assortment of Dad’s treasures from around the house – that old model car he has had since he was a boy, his old Scouts badge, the Elvis 45 record, those old sporting medals he won at school, his ‘lucky’ tie…….. Stick a number on to each object.

• Purchase a small notebook and, using a fresh page for each numbered object, write a question to Dad about the significance of each treasure.

• Place the treasures and the book inside the box, present it to Dad on Father’s Day and encourage him to write down the answers to your questions about his earlier life.

Happy Father's Day for this Sunday here in Australia!
