Your Land My Land GasLand

We supposedly live in an environmentally conscious world, but when capitalism stands in the way of upholding environmentally friendly practices it seems money wins every time.

The 2010 Sundance Special Jury Prize award winner, GasLand, is a David and Goliath style documentary that follows the journey of director Josh Fox and his fight to save his property from natural gas companies mining it.

It’s a familiar story; rural landowners get a lucrative offer from big energy companies to lease their property so the companies can tap into reservoirs located below the landowner’s property.

Unlike his neighbours, Fox didn’t accept the $100,000 offer he got from an oil and gas company.  Instead he chose to find out how accepting the financial offer impacts rural Americans, and did so with camera in hand.

What he finds is absolutely shocking and infuriating.  Americans across the country are living with water they can light on fire, and unexplainable health problems, after accepting those lucrative offers from the multi-million dollar energy companies.

The arrogance and ignorance of the men in suits representing councils and the energy companies is disgraceful.  It’s an inspirational movie which has you feeling determined in fighting the Goliath energy companies that seem to control the Davids in the world.

It’s definitely a must see, especially when there’s much debate in Australia about drilling for oil and gas!

The movie is an eye-opener that will impact your opinions about the major oil and gas companies and the dominant role they have in today’s world.

Gasland is rated PG and runs for 107 minutes.
