Sanctum 3D

When I go to see a James Cameron movie I generally expect to see something innovative and quite frankly extraordinary. Unfortunately for me, Sanctum 3D didn’t live up that expectation.

In terms of an adventure/disaster genre of movie, this would definitely be one of the better ones I’ve seen, but it wasn’t unique. Yes, having 3D filming really explored the caves and diving seems in an entirely new and engaging way – but personally I find 3D movies quite difficult to watch as they strain your eyes and make long-term concentration challenging.

Essentially Sanctum 3D was inspired by a true story of West Australian divers who were trapped in a cave system in the Nullarbor. Although the general premise is the same, this movie is basically a fictional story and a very Hollywood one at that.

Set in the South Pacific, Sanctum tells the story of a group of divers and cavers who are determined to explore one of the world’s deepest unexplored cave systems. Unfortunately when a storm hits, expedition leader Frank McGuire, his 17-year-old son, the trip financier and a mixed bag of experienced and inexperienced divers find themselves trapped. They have no choice but to move deeper into the unexplored cave system to try and find another exit.

The diving and caving scenes are rendered flawlessly and there were times I had to fight off my own feelings of claustrophobia and remind myself I wasn’t actually breathing from a scuba tank. There are certainly no points in this movie where you feel bored, so don’t get me wrong this is far from being a bad movie.

This story is full of the edge of your seat action and dramatic life and death choices that you’d expect from this scenario. It is well made, captivating and engaging and the ending is a little different from what I had expected, which was a nice surprise.

If you count Cliffhanger as one of your favourite movies, then there is absolutely no doubt you will love this film. If you have any interest in seeing this movie though, you must see it at the cinemas as without the 3D you will lose a lot of the nuances, awe and ‘power of nature’ shots the film intended to show.
