Shame (R)
The unravelling of a secret addiction
Director: Steve McQueen
Starring: Michael Fassbender, Carey Mulligan
Runtime: 101 minutes
We are all in our own way creatures of habit, and Brandon (Michael Fassbender) has his art down to a tee. He has carefully managed his sexual addiction so that even those closest to him would not suspect a thing. With success at work and a solitary home life, Brandon slowly moves through the paces to get through the days whilst feeding his addiction. And then Sissy (Carey Mulligan) arrives.

With a troubled sister to care for, Brandon’s routine is disrupted to the point that he struggles to look after himself, let alone Sissy. In trying to clear all traces of his habit, he begins to spiral out of control, taking Sissy down with him.

A deliberated and sometimes dark look into the underpinnings of addiction, this tale is for the thinkers. A very slow moving film but with stunning performances from the two main leads, no stone is left unturned in the journey through the phases of an addict. In cinemas February 9.
