Places to watch - Albany & the Vancouver Cafe
by Rebecca Commons
In a sleepy street in Albany, amongst quaint heritage houses, lies an unassuming cafe. Bracing a leafy corner, the Vancouver Cafe has become a hub for Albany life attracting a diverse crowd from artisans to families.
The scent of fresh coffee tempts you in, and on entering the little door you find yourself in a haven of rustic comfort and foodie delights both to purchase and consume. Owner Alison Teede has created an ambiance which is eclectic and arty with a touch of class and the welcome is always warm. The walls are adorned with an ever changing representation of the talented inhabitants from the region. As you sip your coffee and savour a home baked goodie, your gaze may fall on such delights as quirky paintings of small red shoes, to a skirt fashioned in offbeat fabric and hung as art.
Alison is a natural networker and it was only a matter of time before this eatery, with all its attractions, became the focus for progressive groups to stage exciting events. The lure of top notch cuisine and aesthetically pleasing space was surety that lively gatherings would be a winner.
'Business Divas' ~ the brainchild of Cathie Denehy, threw a Hollywood themed evening which was an instant sell out. The glamorous night featured parades inbetween courses. The collective talents of Miliner Edwina Noll, designer clothing by Bisi Designs, and unique jewellery by Tahli were showcased and admired by the crowd. Popular songstress Theresa Hughes entertained partygoers and the mood was vibrant and dynamic. These lucky ticketholders really did enjoy an impeccably well planned evening - a resounding success.
A Melbourne cup extravaganza quickly followed ~ cleverly entitled 'Frocks and Fillys' ~ and the Vancouver now has regular fun events showcasing live music and always delicious fare. If you're in the area, give yourself a treat and find your way to that unassuming cafe on a leafy corner in Vancouver Road because this little place is all set to make a Big Noise!
