Ode to Spike
Who ironed ‘em all!
by Catherine Jennings
Wise-guys ties
(Just one size)
Old school crest
Sunday best
Dapper Dan
Repo man
Dancing blade
Homespun, handmade
Psychedelic
Staid ol’ relic
Gay an’ fluffy
Corporate toughie
Fast’n’loose
Hangman’s noose
Rad and Kafka
(Do I have ta?)
Strangled grapple
Adams apple
Cool, askew
Fashion crew
Ministerial
Stained and beerial
Football team
Bridegroom’s dream
Interview
Borrowed, blue
Close-up dance
Silk romance
What was crumpled
Now unrumpled
Straight and narrow
As an arrow
Crease-defyin’
Spike’s hot iron
Will by heck fry
Each old necktie
With a story to
Pristine glory
To an fro
Make ‘em glow
Now in packs
On tempting racks
To go again
Round throats of men.
Spike’s hot metal
Old scores settle
Franking furls
Into fine fettle!
