Available in the foyer from 1.15pm; entry to the auditorium from 1.45pm.
Seats are unreserved.
This great, FREE concert season, which has become an institution, will entertain the general public, not just Subiaco residents, from July to October this winter.
A ticketing system, giving entry into the auditorium in order of distribution, is the most likely way patrons will get the seats of their choice. Not that there’s a bad seat in the house at the Subiaco Arts Centre.
Each group of performers is hand picked for entertainment value and talent and the season includes something for all age groups and tastes.
Make this a permanent diary date for the season.
20 July SUPREMELY MOTOWN
Motown
Why do fools fall in love? And why does this fabulous ensemble with their high energy tribute to the sounds of the Sixties, captivate audiences so? Because they are Supremely good at entertaining us. Join them for the first concert of the season as these six great musicians groove you through the biggest and the best from the Motown stable of artists. After an afternoon of The Supremes, Marvin Gaye, The Jackson Five, Stevie Wonder and The Four Tops, you’ll be laughin’, singin’ and dancing in your seat!

Expressionist, jazz-tinged folk
Imbibe theoriginal sound of singer/songwriter Hugh Veldon, also known to many as Martin Moon. Hugh has composed music for circus and theatre productions and performed with such artists as David Byrne (of Talking Heads fame), Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds,Doch Gypsy Orchestra and Francoiz Breut.Experience his diversemusical paletteplayed played by a hugely-talented ensemble of musicians.
3 August BAND OF ANGELS
Gospel choir
This secular community gospel choir sings African and African-American gospel music. The infectious and uplifting sounds of this music will have you a-clappin’ and a-swayin’ to early gospel spirituals, glorious four- part harmonies and modern gospel signature tunes such as ‘Oh Happy Day’, ‘Amazing Grace’, ‘ Wade in the water’ and ‘Walk in the light’ . Directed by Rosie Johnstone, this joyful a cappella choir will sing out the inspirational sounds of gospel music with a generous serve of soul.
10 August ZIGATANGO
Tango and gypsy, with dancers and juggler
This group of young musicians explore the styles of Argentinean tango and traditional gypsy music and the occasional folk tune. Despite being formed only in 2007, they received a WAMI nomination this year in the category of World Music. Last year they joined forces with a dazzlingly-gifted young juggler, Alex Duhig. So you can expect juggling… and tango dancers too. The band is Geoffrey Pearce - violin, Siobhan Finn - viola, Richard Watson - accordion, and Justin Story - guitar.
17 August DOLCE - EVEN SWEETER
Classical instrumental
Viola and cello duo Dolce is joined by the sweet piano playing of Jacinta Jakovcevic for this special concert. Violist Katherine Potter and cellist Bernadette Peters - both Juniper Chamber Orchestra regulars - and Jacinta will be performing works by Elgar, Gershwin, Saint-Saens and Verdi. It will be a varied and accessible program, played by three exceptional musicians.

The poignant, passionate and profound songs of Belgian songwriter Jacques Brel are brought to vivid theatrical life in an intense musical experience by this dynamic, independent theatre company. Brel’s legendary romance, humour and moral conviction are evoked simply and directly, with singer-actors Mitchell Goode, Ruth Wilkin, Sharon Wisniewski, and accompanist Ben Clarke. Songs in this production include ‘Sons of...’, ‘If We Only Have Love’, ‘Next’ and ‘Amsterdam’ as well as the formidable ‘If You Go Away’.

31 August HOWIE MORGAN PROJECT

With a velvet voice and quiet charm, Howie sings his autobiographical but unsentimental songs with great musicality. This busy and respected musician/songwriter has a style that can be described as a cross between roots, soul, pop and rock. The concert will feature some great covers as well as Howie’s own beautiful compositions. Supported by superb bass player and James Morrison Scholarship winner Dane Alderson, with award-winning saxophonist/percussionist James Sandon.

The improv-ed guide to amazing inventions. We know that an apple fell on Isaac Newton's head and Archimedes' bath overflowed. But how did Maria Ann Smith and Ben Lexcen come up with their amazing inventions: the Granny Smith apple and the winged keel?
Our two teams of professional improvisers - Hearts and Bones - battle for the championship title: The Mothers of Invention, using audience suggestions to create fast, funny and physical theatre-on-the-spot. Conceived by actors Sam Longley and Damon Lockwood, the show features WA's best improvisers and will have you shouting Eureka!

Justin Freind has invited some wonderful classical singers to join him on stage. Katherine Jenkins, Mark Alderson and Justin will sing songs, duets and trios from Phantom of the Opera, Les Misérables, My Fair Lady, Oklahoma, HMS Pinafore, Mikado, Pirates of Penzance, Iolanthe and Gondaliers. At the very least.
21 September ADAM HALL AND THE VELVET PLAYBOYS
Swing music and Lindy Hop dancers
This exciting, young, six-piece band is an institution at the Mustang Bar in the city on Friday nights. These topline musicians deliver electrifying shows there, attended by scores of enthusiastic swing dancers. Now they bring their music to Subi, capturing a mood reminiscent of Las Vegas in the 1950s - smooth swingin' jazz, rockin’ blues and good ol' boogie woogie. The Playboys also play more contemporary music, similar to artists as diverse as James Brown, Ray Charles and Harry Connick Jr.
Swing It! dancers will be there to wow, too.
28 September DIAMOND DAVE AND THE DOODADDIES
Swinging blues
Featuring the red hot guitar of Dave Brewer and the sensational harmonica playing of 'Diamond' Dave Billing, this four piece blues band is one of our finest. The DooDaddies cover a solid selection of uplifting grooves including swinging shuffles, soul, boogaloo, cry-in-your-beerblues and more. Yugon Chobanoff (drums) and Bob Thomson (bass) complete the band.
5 October SHANGARA JIVE
African fusion
This celebrated seven-piece band delivers an array of Zimbabwean ritual and contemporary music styles, fused with elements from around the African continent. Led by Zimbabwean-born singer/songwriter, George Joe (winner of four WAMI Awards for World Music with his band AMC), the high energy dance band involves the audience in infectious music from traditional Shona music to kwassa kwassa, jit, dancehall, reggae and soukous. What a way to finish the season!

Since the diagnosis of Kylie Minogue's breast cancer, there has been
an increase in women getting breast cancer screens- but what about the other stuff? Gynaelogical cancers are something that not many of us
are prepared to talk about and are naturally very frightening- as are
sexual health issues and menopause. Be proactive in your awareness of
female specific health issues and join our panel of experts in a night
that will clarify some of the concerns women have about their health.

- Kath Mazzella of GYN Forward is a gynaelogical cancer survivor and
spokesperson. She will be discussing gynaelogical health and the
support networks that are in place.
- Professor Christobel Saunders is the Head of Surgery for UWA
Extension and specialises in breast cancers.
- Prof. Martha Hickey an expert on menopause and associated treatments.
- Dr Jenny McCloskey is a Senior Lecturer in Microbiology and
Immunology and a specialist in sexual health.
